Grades, Running, Eric, Work

All of my grades are finally in-I have 3 A's and 1 A-, that one is from the class from hell, so I'm pretty pleased all around with my grades. Go me. Dean's list again. Not to brag or anything...grades don't mean that much to most people anyway, but still, I like to think it's more an indication of work ethic than actual intelligence, but I think you're smart if you actually do your work, so I guess that's a form of intelligence.

I've been running basically every weekday with Erica and Maria, which is good. The first couple of days were really hard but I've gotten back in shape somewhat. We did 5 miles today and it was hard but it felt great. That's the longest run we're doing this week, next week we'll probably do that twice, and eventually we'll get up to 7 and 8 miles one day a week. Our goal is 10 miles mid-August when Erica gets back from Pennsylvania. That will be the most I've ever done in one run before. Wow. Glad it's not til August. After we graduate Erica and I plan to run the Twin Cities marathon, so I guess 10 miles won't seem like that much by that point!

Not seeing Eric 5 times a week is pretty hard, even though we get to talk on the phone every night and it's the second full week of not seeing each other during the week. I know, I shouldn't complain because everybody else has done this and worse, yada yada yada, but let me tell you, it's really hard to go from seeing each other almost every day to being apart almost every day. I already used to live for the weekends during the summer when I worked; now it will probably just be even more so. Speaking of which, I've already worked overtime, which is nice. I need to save so much of my paychecks from this summer, that any overtime will be so nice just to have a couple bucks extra cash. I think I'll be working a lot of overtime because they took on more work this year and there is a lot of random stuff to do, plus we're already behind. I don't mind though, it might mean less time with Eric on Friday nights because I'd have to get up at 4:15 am on Saturdays, but those weeks he might come home during the week so we have more time together. What a boring post. Oh well, I added links so that at least is good!

One last note-I did spend time at the beach and outside this weekend since it was over 90 and we had no air conditioning, so I am doing more than just working, running, missing Eric, and reading the gazillion books I've read so far! I checked out 6 tonight, and when they're done I'm going to read Brothers Karamazov. Go me again. Yay for summertime, sun, and my soon to be tan skin (maybe). Oh, and my cute new swimsuit!

Temperature says 93 down at the Deposit and Guarantee
But that swimmin' hole it's nice and cold

Work, Babysitting, etc.

I started work at PEI today for the summer. yay. Actually, so far it isn't too bad, which is good because I still have 12 weeks to go! I do have a couple of paper cuts, but oh well. Most of the people aren't that bad, at least the ones that I'll be working with directly. There are some people there I can't stand, but luckily I don't have to work with them on a regular basis. I left a couple things at work already, my lunch bag and my folder, so I have to start remembering everything I bring and am given during the day. Today is a busy day, as is every day this week (and since I've been babysitting). There are at least 3 different things that people have to be at every day this week except Thursday, which only has one thing scheduled. Exciting. I also started running today, and for once in my life Maria is in better shape than me. It's depressing. I thought Erica would be in much better shape because she did track, and I wasn't worried about Maria. Now I'm the slow one. However, oddly, I have more arm strength at this point in time-I did the 20 pushups (I know, not a lot) with less effort than they did (they were still killers), and the human arrows we did I had a little bit less trouble with too. Even though we only did 3 miles, it's more than I've done in 2 months, and I'm going to be sore tomorrow. I need to start doing tons more crunches and stuff too, so I get in good shape. By next week we won't be running less than 4 miles a day. Probably most days between 4 and 6, with longer runs of 7 once every week or 2. Erica is leaving for PA in a few weeks, so Maria and I will be on our own until August, but when she gets back we're going to go on a 10 mile run on a Saturday morning-I've never done more than 7, so hopefully we'll be in shape by then! Well, that's my life at home for now, I'm in a rare good mood and I had a few precious minutes, so I thought I'd blog! Hopefully I'll be able to fit it in every couple of days, so look for posts

When all you got to keep is strong move along, move along like I know you do
And even when your hope is gone move along, move along just to make it through

Back at Home

Another summer at home, and the one I've looked forward to the least out of any summer I can remember. I have to go back to work at PEI, which is basically the worst part of my summer. Almost no good people are coming back (yay for Rachel Haemig who is, that's about it) and the guy who mooned me last summer is unfortunately back. So much for them not hiring back all of the people who suck. People who date the boss's daughter already suck big time, but he isn't even deserving of a job at all. And a lot of new crappy people got hired as well. Including these obnoxious twins who are a year younger than me who everybody thinks are just the greatest thing since sliced bread. And I haven't even started work yet-Theresa was just telling me who was back and who is new. Gee, can't wait to start another crappy summer at a factory with crappy people. To top it off, Eric will be living at St. Thomas this summer and we will only see each other on the weekends. Alan will be living in Wisconsin, and Erica will be in Pennsylvania for most of the summer at a girls summer camp. She will be around for a couple weeks, but not many. Almost all of my friends are going to be gone. Emily Powell, I'm counting on you. Well, at least I'll get plenty of quality time with the fam. Although so far it looks like another summer with lots of fighting, yelling, and dirty-ness. Oh goody.

On another note, I've been back for less than 12 hours and already I am scheduled to babysit tomorrow and Friday, oh wait, every day until next Friday. My parents are going out to DC for Matt's graduation (congrats for him finishing law school) and they leave Friday. I will be the oldest one at home, therefore, I get to play mom for a week for 9 kids. And I have a full time job. Great practice I guess, but still not fun. My family is not fun practice. Any family would be better than my own. I shouldn't say that I guess, at least I know my family. And I have popcorn and movies to bribe them with. And candy. Lots of candy. My responsibilities as a fill-in mother include making them clean the house (grandparents and aunts are going to babysit during the week while Theresa and I are at work and the big kids are at school), taking kids to baseball pictures and practice, softball games, concerts (unfortunately I can't even go to Maria's concert), making sure Clara has a bag lunch for her field trip on Wednesday and the same for Jeph on Friday, getting Clara's class a treat for her birthday, and my favorite, Springfest. I think that and the movie with popcorn on Friday are the only things I'm looking forward to right now.

Is everybody going crazy? Is anybody gonna save me?

Brown-noser

I'm not actually sure that brown-noser is hyphenated or not. Mabye it's just one word. Brownnoser. Brownoser. Hmmm. What do you all think? Anyway. The reason I'm trying to figure it out is because Tuesday in my Social and Political Philosophy class we discussed why privacy is so important, if it has meaning everywhere and if so why? what makes privacy meaningful and valuable, etc. The whole class was more talkative than usual and in somewhat of a giddy mood. When the professor asked why, the class started talking again and I heard someone say quietly that it was a good topic, so I said out loud "Well, it is a good topic, everybody has something to say about privacy" and this girl, who incidentally is a huge suck-up, incredibly so, basically everyone in the class thinks so, and she's also a know-it-all-she tries to show off with her knowledge of "Cuba"(every day something about Cuba, that's really all she knows about I think), she's nosy, rude, whatever, plus on the first day of class told me I was too young to get married (I hope you get the picture that I don't really like her, most people in the class don't, and she really is a huge suck-up), anyway, she apparantly said out loud "you have a little brown on your nose" (I didn't actually hear her, I just saw her point to her nose and then someone else told me what she said)! It was so funny! I was just about dying, because of the irony. This one girl in my class later on told me that she wanted to comment back "you're whole face is brown" because coming from this girl, it was absolutely hilarious. So funny. Rude too, but I don't really care what she said, it's just funny that she said it. And the comment wasn't even sucking up, which is even funnier.

You think you're special but I know, and I know and I know, and we know that you're not

Last Week of Classes

It's the last week of classes (hence the title) and lucky for me I hardly have any homework. It's very nice. Very very nice. I do have 2 finals, but only 2 (I did have a take home final in the class from hell but I'm done with that so that's over with finally). I'm a little worried about my social and political philosophy final, but I did really well on the midterm and I've been doing well on papers and class discussions so hopefully he'll give us a study guide tomorrow and I should be set. My other final is in another philosophy class, biomedical ethics, and we've had the study guide for about 2 weeks and I started working through it a couple of days ago, typing up what I need to know so I can print it out and study this weekend and next week before I take the test on Wednesday. All in all, I think I'm going to do fairly well in my classes, not sure how well that is exactly, but if I study I'll do well on the tests and I think I'll get at least a B if not better in German, and theology is hit or miss but if I don't get an A I'll be pretty mad. Sorry that this isn't the most exciting to read, but I felt like I had to post something. Also, if you all haven't noticed, I am doing song quotes as well. I was going to start doing them awhile ago and yes I got the idea from Matt but I didn't do it because he said so, but because I wanted to.

I was just about to quote Mark Twain
When I realized that it's all in vain

Life

I know that life is frequently unfair, but sometimes I really wish it wasn't. Sometimes things just need to be fair, and equal, and they need to go well for me. Sometimes good things need to happen to me, and not any bad things.

Rude People

I didn't get the internship I applied for. At least, I'm assuming so, since they said they would call by "early this week" and let me know. Well, I never got a call. So I, being smart and whatever, called the guy and left a messge on his machine asking about it, and I left my number for him to call back. He never did. I personally find that to be very rude. The way they made it sound was that they would call me whether or not I got the job to let me know, since I interviewed with them, and I even took the initiative to call them back and find out, and they still didn't call. In my opinion, that is very rude and unprofessional. Who does that? Rude people. That's who. Plus now I have to go back to work at PEI, which sucks. At least I'll be making $9.50 this summer. And the hours are good. But I hate that place.

What's wrong baby? Don't they treat you like they should?

Bad Day

Daniel Powter
Bad Day
Where is the moment we need at the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on
You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on
Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on
You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
(Oh.. Holiday..)
Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong
(yeah...)
So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
