reception halls

It looks like Eric and I will be looking at reception halls as well as booking the church over Easter break, and hopefully booking a reception hall sometime in May. We weren't planning on booking one until June, but I was talking to this girl I know who is also getting married, October of '07, and they are looking at reception halls already and a lot of them are already booked! This far in advance-for October! So now I'm worried that a lot of the halls that we'll be looking at will already be booked for August '07 since summer is a busy time to get married. Hopefully we'll be able to get what we want and won't have too many problems with the hall, I don't think I could handle big wedding problems this far in advance. Maybe in a year, closer to the actual wedding, but not a year and a half before it!

Bleh

Life is bleh. Nothing going on but stress and school and my computer went crazy but it's working finally which is good, and no new grey's anatomy tonight, and I'm alone in my room which is boring, and I have a million hours of homework that I don't want to do, I still don't have a summer job, it's not warm weather yet, I'm poor, stressed, bored with life, busy with homework, lazy and not getting anything done that I need to, my knee hurt this past week during and after hiking and cave-crawling so I have to go to the doctor and I was just here barely a week ago, everybody's lives are much more exciting and fun and better than mine, and I am not in a good mood right now. Plus I have to go write about Rousseau and read for my really really crappy theology class. Crappy time a million because I have the worst professor and everbody in the class makes me feel like if I say anything different from what they say I'm a horrible, close-minded, prejudiced and discriminatory person. I hate St. Kate's sometimes, because they're all so freaking "open-minded" that you can't be "conservative" about anything anymore because you're automatically close-minded. Freaking people.

Tennessee

So my attempt at a smart post didn't go over so well. Ah well, if you want, continue (or start) to comment on it. I won't be posting for about a week, since I'm going to Tennessee for spring break and probably won't be at a computer much. I am looking forward to this trip, except for the part where we sleep in a cave...what is wrong with people? Who actually thinks that that is fun?

Procreation

This is an attempt at an intelligent blog. It probably won't be very good. It's going to look at procreation as a broader idea than just reproduction between a man and a woman.

In my Social Justice: A Christian Perspective class we had a speaker who talked about homosexuality. Some of the things he talked about were bibilical texts used to condemn homosexuality, texts that give us reasons to accept homosexuals as they are and to not condemn them, and various reasons that we might support homosexuality. One of these is procreation, which has been used as one of the biggest reasons why homosexual relationships are immoral in the Catholic Church. Procreation, in a traditional Catholic view, is seen as producing children through sexual relations between a man and a woman. This is the main function of marriage, or it has been for most of church history. Another function that has begun to override this is the unity and expression of love between husband and wife; however, procreation is still given as one of the leading reasons against not homosexuality but also birth control. (This post is not about causes of support for this but rather an idea of procreation that leaves an opening for wider acceptance of homosexuality and homosexual relations)

Instead of looking at procreation so narrowly as to say it is limited to reproduction, we should view it a a broader concept that includes support of creation such as adoption, volunteering with children or handicapped, or doing things that support life in a way other than creating new generations. Not every couple is called to or can produce children through "natural" means, and it is unfair to them as well as faulty reasoning to say that they are not completing their relationship because they don't "procreate" in the view that the church accepts. It is also demeaning to single people who don't have the opportunity to "procreate" but who are willing to support life through adoption or through community work, etc. This applies to homosexual relationships as well. Having children is not the only way to support procreation, nor is it the only way to fulfill a marital relationship, and we need to rethink what our view of procreation is in order to be more inclusive of non-traditional relatioships.

Job Search

Because I hate working at Printing Enterprises, the job that I have had for the past 4 summers and that pays very well and has excellent hours but that is not very professional and basically sucks all around, mostly due to the idiotic people, I decided I cannot go back there another summer. However, since I am in college and getting married as well, I definitely need money. This means I have to find a new job. I don't think I realized how lucky I was-compared to this, I was basically handed the job at PEI on a silver platter. Or some sort of dish anyway. I need to find a job that either pays relatively the same (or more) then PEI, or at least a job that I don't have to take too large of a pay cut. I am discovering I have no idea what I am going to do, or how to go about finding a new job. I've searched online, with the city, the county, the city of Blaine (which turns out to have some things I can apply for) and other random places, as well as requesting my sister to pick up some applications and bring them to me this weekend. Gina also was very kind and looked up some jobs I can apply for. I will be applying for the widest variety of jobs, from delivering flyers to Borders to park and recreational stuff and even an internship or two. My goal is just to apply for enough jobs that I will be hired at at least one, if not more, so that I can choose the job that works best for me. I have some applications to work on tomorrow, as well as calling different places to either find out about the jobs or find out how to apply. This is all in addition to my regularly busy schedule of classes, homework, my on-campus job, Eric, friends, etc. Plus I'm going wedding dress shopping and possibly having friends from high school over on Friday. Oh, and midterms are next week and then I'm going to Tennessee for spring break. Which actually should be very fun. Basically, my life is getting busier, but hopefully after I fill out all of these applications and after midterms are done, life should slow down a bit. And then I'll work on wedding plans, and life will be crazy again. Just how I like it.

Natural Rights

What are some good arguments for why humans have natural rights, if we do, and what those natural rights are? For example, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (or property, if you're John Locke). You can say anything that makes sense as long as it is not a religious argument. This is not because the religious argument is bad, only because I'm looking for other, less obvious reasons.
